Bank Holiday Problem 2018

The holiday year in England and Wales is 1 April to 31 March, and you might not yet have looked at where Easter falls in 2018. Many employees have contracts that state that they get 20 days plus bank holidays. Normally, that’s fine as there are 8 bank holidays in a year so the employee is correctly getting 28 days’ paid holiday per year. However, between 1 April 2018 and 31 March 2019 there are only 7 bank holidays! This means that employers will have to give their employees an extra days holiday so that they receive the statutory minimum.

It is Easter that has caused the problem! In 2018 Good Friday is on 30 March and Easter Monday is on 2 April. In 2019 Good Friday is on 22 April. Therefore there is no Good Friday 2018/19 holiday year that means affected employees need to have 21 non-bank holidays. This does not affect employers who run their holidays year from 1 January to 31 December.
